Discover Ranchi: The Captivating City of Waterfalls

Endowed with nature’s finest splendours, Ranchi stands as one of Jharkhand’s most picturesque urban retreats. Surrounded by dense bamboo groves, verdant grasslands, and rich mineral deposits, this vibrant capital is celebrated for harbouring four of the region’s most magnificent natural cascades. Whilst the crisp winter months of December and January present an ideal season for excursions, the enduring allure of Ranchi's natural landscape makes it a rewarding destination throughout the year.

  • Jonha Falls

Perched gracefully along the periphery of the Ranchi plateau, Jonha Falls offers a sublime example of a hanging valley waterfall. Formed by a geological phenomenon known as landscape rejuvenation, a sudden break in the river channel gradient—or nick point—causes the torrent to plunge vertically from a height of 43 metres. Visitors are invited to descend 722 steps down a stone pathway to admire the stunning panorama of the surrounding valley.

  • Panch Ghagh Falls

Situated near the tranquil village of Khunti, Panch Ghagh Falls presents a striking scene where the Banai River fractures into five distinct streams, cascading dramatically over towering, steep hillsides. The base of the cascade offers a tranquil atmosphere, making it a favoured setting for weekend escapes and outdoor leisure. Built pathways connect the various waterfalls, allowing travelers to explore the surroundings easefully:

  • Dassam Falls

Plunging across the bed of the Kanchi River—a vital tributary of the Subarnarekha River—Dassam Falls drops from a height of 44 metres along the sharp edge of the Ranchi plateau. Like Jonha, this feature represents a rejuvenation nick point, where a steep break in the gradient propels crystal-clear water down rocky faces, filling the surrounding amphitheatre with the resonant echo of rushing water.

  • Hundru Falls

Etched into the course of the Subarnarekha River, Hundru Falls is one of the highest cascades in the state, descending 98 metres (322 feet) over a plateau scarp. Centuries of relentless water erosion have sculpted dramatic rock formations around the cascade, adding to its visual splendour. During the monsoon season, the fall transforms into a formidable surge of water, whereas the drier months offer a serene setting featuring a natural plunge pool at its base, suitable for bathing and relaxation.
